US Justice Department Probes Minnesota Democrats Over Alleged ICE Obstruction

US Justice Department Investigates Minnesota Democrats Over ICE Obstruction

Investigation into Governor Walz and Mayor Frey

The United States Department of Justice has launched an investigation into Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, accusing them of potentially obstructing federal immigration enforcement operations carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Reports from CBS News indicate that the inquiry centers on public statements and actions by the two Democratic leaders that federal officials claim may have encouraged interference with ICE activities. This represents a significant escalation in tensions between the Trump administration and Democratic-led cities.

Federal Judge Restricts ICE Actions Amid Protests

The investigation comes as protests intensify in Minneapolis following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good by an ICE agent during an enforcement operation.

US District Judge Katherine Menendez issued an 83-page ruling limiting the authority of federal law enforcement officers in the city, including:

  • Prohibiting the use of pepper spray and other non-lethal force against peaceful protesters
  • Blocking arrests of demonstrators not actively interfering with law enforcement
  • Preventing vehicle stops without reasonable, articulable suspicion

The judge clarified that merely following federal officers does not justify detention or arrest.

Details on Renee Good Shooting

Emergency response reports reveal that Renee Good sustained at least three gunshot wounds, with a possible fourth to the head. Paramedics found her unresponsive and she was pronounced dead en route to the hospital.

Video footage shows ICE agents approaching Good’s SUV. As she attempted to drive away, an agent standing near the front opened fire. Federal authorities claim the agent believed his life was in danger, alleging Good tried to strike him with the vehicle. Local officials dispute this account, stating Good posed no threat.

The FBI is investigating, but no federal civil rights probe has been announced. Local authorities say they have been excluded.

Political Fallout and Reactions

Governor Walz accused federal authorities of abusing the justice system for political purposes, labeling the actions “authoritarian tactics.”

Mayor Frey echoed similar sentiments, saying he would not be intimidated and accused the federal government of bringing “chaos and danger” to Minneapolis.

Former President Donald Trump described protesters as “highly paid professionals” and accused city and state leaders of losing control. While he acknowledged the Insurrection Act, he saw no immediate need to deploy troops.

Democratic Lawmakers Criticize ICE Operations

Several Democratic lawmakers visited Minnesota to hold hearings and press conferences criticizing ICE enforcement tactics. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar accused ICE of deliberately provoking fear, while Representative Pramila Jayapal called for reforms, including:

  • Visible identification for ICE agents
  • Mandatory body cameras
  • Arrests only with judicial warrants

Lawmakers also heard testimonies from residents detained for hours despite being US citizens. The Department of Homeland Security maintains that officers acted within legal boundaries and denied racial profiling allegations.
