Trump says he will ‘100%’ carry out Greenland tariffs threat, as EU vows to protect its interests

Trump Vows 100% Tariffs on Europe Over Greenland Control Dispute

Donald Trump has reaffirmed that he will “100%” follow through on his threat to impose tariffs on European countries that oppose his demand to take control of Greenland, significantly escalating tensions with long-standing Nato allies. Trump has warned that countries resisting Washington’s position will face trade penalties, regardless of their alliance status.

European nations have strongly rallied behind Greenland’s sovereignty, with Denmark’s foreign minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stating that the US president cannot threaten his way to ownership of the semi-autonomous Danish territory. He stressed that Europe has clear red lines and has no intention of escalating the situation through confrontation.

The United Kingdom also rejected Trump’s stance. UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper reiterated that Greenland’s future is a matter solely for Greenlanders and the Danish government to decide. Trump, however, declined to rule out the use of force when questioned by NBC News, responding with “No comment,” while insisting tariffs would proceed.

Under Trump’s plan, Britain would face a 10% tariff from 1 February, rising to 25% from 1 June, unless Denmark agrees to sell Greenland to the United States. The same measures would apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland, all of whom are members of Nato, founded in 1949.

Trump further criticised Europe, arguing it should focus on the Russia-Ukraine war rather than Greenland. Denmark has warned that any US military action in Greenland could spell the end of Nato, a concern echoed across European capitals. In a symbolic show of unity, several European states recently sent small troop deployments to Greenland.

Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that the alliance would continue coordinating with Denmark and Greenland to maintain Arctic security. Meanwhile, the European Union has called an emergency summit in Brussels to decide how to respond. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the bloc does not seek confrontation but will defend sovereignty, adding that “sovereignty is not for trade.”

Tensions have also spilled into diplomatic exchanges, with messages released showing Trump blaming Norway for his failure to win the Nobel Peace Prize, a claim rejected by Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, who reaffirmed Norway’s support for Denmark over Greenland.
