Afridi says KP govt won’t become part of any ‘failed’ policy

KP Chief Minister Afridi addressing tribal elders and parliamentarians, stressing tribal consultations, development reforms, and peace initiatives in merged districts

PESHAWAR: Chief Minister Mohammad Sohail Afridi has emphasized that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government will not support any failed policy, as lasting peace in the tribal districts can only be achieved through consultation with local elders and the provincial government. Addressing a jirga comprising parliamentarians and tribal elders from Bajaur, he said that peace had been restored in 2018 but deliberate attempts were being made to destabilize the region. Afridi highlighted that decisions taken behind closed doors have historically worsened the law and order situation, and stressed that all stakeholders must be on the same page to ensure stability. During the jirga, participants discussed law and order challenges, development schemes, and coordination among tribal districts including Bajaur, Khyber, and Kurram. Former governor Shaukatullah remarked, “Governments are run with wisdom. There should be a mechanism where all stakeholders agree on a point and work collectively.” Afridi assured that if federal funds for the merged districts are delayed, the provincial government would reallocate resources from other development projects to support Bajaur. Issues such as compensation for damaged homes, implementation of Accelerated Implementation Program (AIP), and recruitment in the police department were also discussed. More in-depth reporting on tribal district development can be found at Dawn News.

The Chief Minister also addressed the compensation for partially damaged houses in Bajaur, increasing it from Rs0.16 million to Rs0.5 million following recent operations. He directed officials to register displaced persons within one week and noted that sectarian tensions had been exploited by enemies, causing further instability. Afridi highlighted the critical need for a unified development strategy and law enforcement coordination to stabilize the merged districts. He also pledged to visit Kurram district soon to resolve the issues of displaced communities and ensure that resources reach the affected families. For additional updates, see BBC News.

In addition to the tribal district jirgas, Afridi addressed a PTI-led street movement in Mansehra, initiated from Karachi under Imran Khan’s guidance, stating that it had successfully mobilized citizens from Sindh to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Speaking at Khatm-i-Nubowat Chowk and College Doraha, he highlighted that every city and public square had been transformed into a platform for citizen advocacy, demanding the immediate release of PTI founding chairman Imran Khan and urgent political reforms. The Chief Minister accused the federal government of failing to address socio-political and economic crises and said that the movement reflects the people’s determination for change. PTI provincial leaders including Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Babar Saleem Swati, and Junaid Akbar were present to support the initiative. Afridi stressed that development, law enforcement, and tribal consultation must go hand in hand to ensure stability in the province. The merged districts, which have faced decades of conflict and underdevelopment, require strategic planning, proper funding, and active participation of local stakeholders. His announcements on increased funding, revised compensation, and recruitment reforms are aimed at reducing displacement and improving the quality of governance. Analysts note that coordination among provincial authorities, tribal elders, and federal support is crucial to maintain lasting peace in the region. This comprehensive approach has been backed by public support and is documented in reports on Dawn News and BBC News.

In conclusion, CM Mohammad Sohail Afridi’s engagement with tribal elders and support for the PTI-led street movement reflects a dual focus on regional stability and national political mobilization. With initiatives such as increased compensation, police recruitment reforms, and active tribal consultations, KP aims to mitigate conflict and promote development in its merged districts.
